1 October 2010 - Friday

1 Oct – Friday
We got up at 5:30 a.m. to catch our flight from Honolulu to Maui. We got to the airport quicker than expected but we were really lucky. Our flight left on time and we arrived in Maui with no problems. The rental car was something else. I had reserved a full size car through the Emerald Club of National in both Honolulu and Maui. In Honolulu we got a Lincoln Town car with a huge trunk which worked well for the 4 of us. In Maui, the same service was a Chevy Impala which would not hold our luggage. After considerable negotiation we got a Ford Escape SUV with a reasonable upgrade charge. On the way to Lahania we continued to see beautiful flowers growing wild beside the road. We got to Lahania HUNGRY and found a luncheon place (Cheeseburger in Paradise.) The food was good and the view was great. We went to the Bed and Breakfast and were welcomed by Penny. James and I stayed here before and were pleased with the accommodations and her management. After we unpacked we decided to ride downtown and explore. We rode down the beach and noticed that the waves are active but not as high as those on Oahu. There are lots of boats around the town and we even spotted a sail boat that was sinking. The beach is different from Oahu; there is less sand and more large, smooth black rocks. We also saw several trees beside the water that appeared to be lying in the ocean. The town is really nice – it is not modern buildings like Honolulu and there are only narrow streets. I LOVE IT! We shopped a while and then found the Banyan Tree in front of the Old Lahaina Courthouse. The courthouse was built in 1859 while Hawaii had a king. It was restored in the 70’s. The Banyan Tree was planted in 1873 and, according to information given here, is the largest one in the world and is still growing. We ate dinner at Bubba Gump’s. We wanted to view the sunset but it was very cloudy so the sunset is ok but not great. We spotted a guy with a dog that looked just like Jonsee but obviously was calmer since this dog STAYED in the golf cart! I suppose you guessed that Penny has internet at the Bed and Breakfast and there is no charge – unlike the Hilton which charged $16 a DAY to use the internet! I’ll be posting as I have time. We are looking forward to THE GAME tomorrow and are hitting the bed a little early. We are looking for a great day tomorrow.
