29 September – Wednesday
We made a few pictures around the hotel before we started out today. James and Tom just had to see what they would like with more hair – UGH! That is also a picture of a fan in one of the store in the resort. James wants a fan just like that for our house – problem wouldn’t cost more than 1 arm and 1 leg! Yes, that is an ABC store in our resort! It is NOT like the ABC stores in Alabama. These ABC stores are similar to 7/11 Stores and are EVERYWHERE in Hawaii. After we left the hotel we headed to Diamond Head. Tom had thought he wanted to take the trail but after looking at the layout he decided against it – SMART! Diamond Head was used as a defense site during WWII. Bunkers were carved in the side of the volcano and large guns were placed there. To get to the top you have a go up a long path, though a tunnel, and up a series of steps. It is a difficult climb but I am told the view is wonderful. As we came down from the Diamond Head we had beautiful views from the road and then we happened upon a Hawaii Community College affiliated with the University of Hawaii. The magnificent blooms in the trees are what we first noticed and later we discovered the large cactus garden. The entrance way was also very beautiful. When we left the college campus we drove back to the blowhole to determine if the waves and tides would allow us to see the blowhole in action. It was better than earlier in the week and the water did shoot out from the hole in the lava tube. Tom and Carolyn used this opportunity to “get their feet” in the ocean on the beach where the surfers were swimming. One of the waves came in higher than Carolyn expected and she got pretty wet. We came back to the hotel and changed clothes for our dinner cruise. As our ship left the harbor we got a good view of a giant train built in a playground on a small island in the harbor. We also had a great view of Diamond Head. The food was great. The night skyline was beautiful and the show was very enjoyable. It is something I would recommend to others.
