First day to wake up in eastern Canada. It is an eye-opener! We left a 7:30 wake up call and the phone
range at 6:30 Eastern time. That is when
we learned we are on ALANTIC TIME!!! We
lost an hour when we went to Knoxville and now we have lost ANOTHER hour. I had read an article by Bob Terry about the
extremely high tides at Fundy Bay and about something called “Reversing
waterfalls.” We drove to the waterfalls
first. We were there at low tide and it
appeared to be normal river rapids. The
information center recommended we come back late in the day to see the effects
of the tides.
We decided to take the Fundy trail which was open for part of the Fundy bay. The ride was great. We saw the rugged coast line and the black
beach sand.
We drove through one of
several covered bridges that are used on a daily basis by citizens of New
Brunswick.
We also saw the difference in
high tide and low tide at a small fishing village.
We were astonished at the
listed price of gasoline (never did figure it out – something about liters vs
gallons.)
We went back to the Reversing
waterfalls and really saw the difference.
The St. John River empties into Fundy Bay. During high tide in the Bay the tide pushes
itself up into the St. John River and over this set of deep rapids. It has the effect of reversing the
waterfall.
While we were there we ate
lobster rolls – our first. James liked
them. I thought they were ok but not
great. Later we walked downtown where we
saw granite sculptors working with electric saws, beautiful flowers and some
unusual statues of fun people.
Back in
the room we watched the weather on TV.
The forecast is 18 degrees c.
Sure sounds cold but I have no idea what the temperature will be
tomorrow. Grandkids are in school. It is Ally’s first day in kindergarten. Good day for us.
