Got up early and headed to Bar Harbor Maine. Short drive but 2 lane roads all the
way. As we got into town we began to
notice lots of “No vacancy” signs.
Schools are still out in this area and we found that Bar Harbor (Acadia
National Park) is within driving distance of 25% of the U.S. population and I
think half of them were in town. We
finally found a place that was neat, clean and friendly (translation – NOT
NEW).
The owner was nice and gave us good
recommendations. We went to town for a
while and again were amazed at how pet friendly these places are – water bowls
everywhere. Also, there were some unique structures.
We went into the National
Park and drove the route to the lighthouse (the shortest route.) The coast was beautiful.
We also noticed that low tide is very noticeable
because you can tell where the water had been.
That is the first time we have really noticed it on a coastline.
We met a volunteer at the lighthouse who told
us that the housing for the light keeper has been empty 2 years. The Coast Guard has taken over the
lighthouses and is phasing out the light keepers. It is sad.
Headed back to the motel, James noticed a house with a solar water heater
on the roof. In discussion with the
motel owner we learned that use of solar water heaters is not uncommon.
Back at the motel we were both exhausted - the
bed sure was comfortable.
